Granulocytic sarcoma is a localized tumor mass composed of immature cells of the granulocytic series infiltrating an extramedullary site. It was first described by Burns in 1811. Most cases of granulocytic sarcoma occur in association with
leukemia
or
myeloproliferative disorders. Rarely, however, granulocytic sarcoma presents without blood or bone marrow evidence of leukemia. Granulocytic sarcomas can occur virtually anywhere in the body. The most common sites of involvement include soft
tissue,
lymph nodes, skin, vessel, prostate. Rarely, the tumor can present as an epidural mass resulting in spinal cord compression.
We report leukemia patients with granulocytic sarcoma who initially presented with spinal cord compression or brain mass, with complete remission being effected by localized radiation therapy or systemic chemotherapy.
